Dragonera is one of Mallorca's most valuable natural treasures. It's a 6km long dramatic stretch of rock that's named because of its likeness to a dragon's back rising out of the water. It's located off Sant Elm beach.
In 1987 this part of the island became a natural conservation area. Nowadays it's under the protection of the Majorca Council from commercial development.
You can take a boat over to the island. There are regular sailings boat trips from the marina at Puerto d'Andratx to Dragonera. On the island you'll find a small museum and evidence of a Roman settlement at the Cova de sa Font.
Dragonera is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna, including its own sub-species of Balearic lizard. If you're lucky you might also see Leonor falcons, Cory's shearwaters and European shags.
The island's highest point is Na Popis in the Tramuntana Mountains. It measures 360 metres high and has an old lighthouse on top. At its nearest point Dragonera is only 700 metres from Mallorca and separated by the "Es Freu" channel.
You can make private visits to the island but only with an official permit from the local council offices.
